Rug Help

People, I desperately need your help. My wool rug will not stop shedding and I am about to go insane. I love my zebra rug, but if I have to see one more black fuzz ball rolling down the hallway like tumbleweed.....I might hurt someone. Before I bought this rug, I read all the reviews and the tips on how to care for your wool rug. They all said the rug should stop shedding after 15 - 20 vacuumings. I have vacuumed this rug no less than 150 times. And the shedding continues. I am becoming a crazy person. My once beautiful pristine zebra rug, now looks perpetually dirty because of all the black fuzzies. See that picture up there? Yeah...it doesn't look like that anymore and that makes me sad. So, all of you wool rug owners...please impart some wisdom on me. Help a girl out, before I have to commit myself to the looney bin over a hairy rug!!!

I think I have the same rug. I vaccum it constantly because my kids drop food all over it, but you are right it sheds a whole lot.
I copied the link to the picture of mine...when it was brand new the white was stark white..now not so much, but for me that is okay, because I didn't want the white to be stark white. Isn't that awful! I am ok with my rug looking grungy to hide the stark white! Ha

I wonder if the trick for when you are using a paint roller would work. On a roller you would wrap masking tape around it and pull off any loose roller stuff.

I will be interested to see the suggestions because my wool rug still sheds after 5 years !

I feel your pain! I bought a wool rug about a year ago and it still sheds. It will get better! Mine is still shedding but it is MUCH LESS than before. When I vaccuum it I still fill my canister with fuzz but I don't find as much all over the room! I was told that there isn't much you can do but vaccuum... I swear my rug should be bald by now!

Best wishes,
Tammy

I wish I could help. When I worked for the group of decorators I used to sell Feizy and Jaunty wool rugs. I bought a Jaunty rug and I complained to the ladies that it was shedding. one of the ladies laughed and said that shedding was just something I would have to live with "for awhile" and that it was the price of buying a nice rug.

See-it didn't help. I just wanted to confirm that you will have to live with it as far as I know. Bummer I know.

Well looks like we are out of luck. I have a wool rug by my entry and if you know anything about me, you know I don't like "stuff" sticking to my feet and every time I step on this rug either my socks or feet are covered in fuzz... grrr wool!

Oh, man how I wish someone would have an answer to this dilemma. We, too, have a wool rug that was beautiful when we bought it...but it's orange...so inevitably I find little orange fuzz balls EVERYWHERE. It makes my house feel dirty! I hope someone solves our problem for us :)

My deep red rug shed for over 6 months constantly on hardwood floors. It did get better after that and vaccuuming takes care of it, as long as I vaccuum 2-3 times a week. And being slightly OCD, that's not a problem!

Mine still sheds a little, it slowed down after about a year. I sprayed it with a fine mist water bottle before vacuming and that helped pick up some of the fuzz. I can imagine that really is frustrating with white and black. Good luck!

Oh my word!! They shed like mad and they never stop!!!!! Even after 5 years. I can't believe it's not bald. I have only wood floors, so have to have something. My next step is to try those Ballard Designs indoor/outdoor rugs and try one as a runner in my kitchen. Seriously, vacuuming up dust bunnies the size of Rhode Island is not the hobby I was looking for!!

Sounds like wool rugs are a major problem! That's why I never buy anything expensive for my house. :o) My Target rugs never shed!! Ha!

I was recently having the same problem with a rug and my mother told me to turn off the beater brush on the vacuum- it worked! It took a few "vacuumings" but it stopped shedding! The beater brush was pulling up the fibers and causing the massive shedding. Give it a try- hope it works.

Sixty-Fifth Avenue said...

Yes, its the beater brushes fault. The tumble weeds will slow down a lot when you turn that off.

I was getting concerned no one had an answer... I have had my wool rugs for about 2 years and they continue to shed. I am a bit OCD and sometimes vacuum them three or four times a day. I know they don't shed as much as they used to but still it buggs!! I am going to try the no go on the beater brush that sounds totally legit! Great idea ladies!!! Thanks! By the way I love your zebra rug SOOO cute!!! Good Luck!!

My mom is having the same dilemma. Her wool rug is shedding, too. She asked a professional carpet cleaner and they told her that rugs and carpets made of wool are highly sensitive, very expensive and shedding is inevitable. Again, I inquired about it with our local wood flooring, (Tampa based) store, who also specializes in carpets. They advised me that in order to prevent shedding, a wool rug is better placed in a low-traffic area in the house because people threading on it causes friction, which in turn causes the fibers to shed. Vacuuming will help, too. Hope this helps. Good luck!

That zebra rug looks good, but if the rug gets dirty, it will affect the beauty of the room where it is placed. Also, why don't you try carpet cleaners? I think that they offer rug cleaning too. My floor is carpeted and I live a busy life at work, which is why I go for carpet cleaning (LA located cleaners) service to clean my carpeted floors especially during the busy days of the week.

My house would be a mess if I don't ask anyone to help me, but thankfully, I know where I can get the services of the carpet cleaning service. Los Angeles, where I am currently residing (and other households) commonly has carpeted floors, which is why those cleaners are abundant.

It takes proper knowledge on taking care of wool carpets. According on TV, wool is the best-looking carpet yet needs extra care during vacuum cleaning. You should get some extra tips from respected carpet cleaners. Winston-Salem NC has lots to offer in terms of this.
Please take care of your zebra design, it’s pretty.

The wool stripes are the best! The men in carpet cleaning (Cypress) will enjoy cleaning it. They love technical designs. They want intricacy and challenge on their cleaning. That's what I love about their way of carpet cleaning. Cypress TXcleaners always put their hearts on their profession.

A little know fact, the quality and smell of office carpets and rugs are also dependent on how well ventilated an area inside the building is. Heat is also a factor to the life of its material and the accumulation of dust on it. Best bet would be investing on high quality hvac services. Minneapolis establishments seem to be a step ahead when it comes down to coping with their climate. When talking about effective hvac services, St Paul also comes to mind.

Carpets are still better than cold floors.

Did you check if your vacuum cleaner is suitable for your carpet? Also, it would be better if your vacuum bag is empty when you clean the carpet, so that the vacuum won’t lose suction. Did the suggestions work for you? How is your carpet now?

Raking, brushing, or grooming your rug weekly should help to reduce the shedding. There’s a special rake at specialty carpet stores that shouldn’t cost you more than $50. A room or a pet brush can also work, but avoid products, like wire-bristled brushes, that are harsh on fibers. You can also cut down tufts of wool so that they don’t look fuzzy, but don’t pull the fibers as you work so that you can avoid more shedding.

I needed a rug to protect the floor under my roll around chair and figured those strips of otherwise useless fabric could somehow be put to work. There was really nothing to lose if it didn't work out.
